So my first experience with Virginia traffic court was October 19, 2011. Got there early. Took my laptop bag in and it was promptly confiscated. Nothing with a camera is allowed in the building, which I find odd. They post the traffic dates on electronic boards as to which court you are in. Didn’t find my name posted anywhere and then realized my court date is for the 20th.
Come back the next day and I had noticed a Denny’s on the way. Got their early enough for an all American slam before court. Parked and left all the electronics in the car. Found my courtroom and sat. And sat. 3 hours in, they called my name. The cop that pulled me over was there. The judge said to me “the charges against you carry the possibility of jail time. Can you afford a lawyer?”
“no.” I answered.
The judge sent to the room where you are eval’d to see if you qualify for a public defender. I didn’t. The judge made me sign a paper indicating my understanding that if I showed up without a lawyer the trial would proceed anyway.
I left and hired a referral from a friend. $500.
This past Saturday I went to the Arlington branch of the DMV to get my license. That branch was closed because the computer was down. The Chantilly branch was open until 6. Drove out to Chantilly in bumper-to-bumper traffic (yes, on a Saturday) waited in line for 45 min. Obtained the necessary forms and began filling them out.
“do you wear glasses?” FUCK. Left them at home and I won’t pass the eye test without them.
Drive back home (45 min, heavy traffic) get the glasses. Walk the dog. Back to DMV, same traffic.
Finally obtained VA license about 2 hour later.
I’m now sitting again at Denny’s on the way to meet my
Asher before traffic court hoping I don’t get thrown in jail and turn into a criminal like Beecher from Oz.

So I work on a website called Performance.gov. It’s a tracking site for government agencies and the effectiveness of the programs they employ. I don’t have any insight or ability to change any of the data or content on the website, so don’t write me about that, but I do develop the front end.

We recently rolled out a new menu system that uses the downloadable font “Helvetica Neue Condensed Bold” for the menu’s main font. It’s very clear, very bold and makes a great menu font. We use WebFonts.fonts.com and it’s completely licensed. They run a great service so check them out. The project is drupal 6 based but we forgo their interface to do a simple CSS include at the top of the page.

The problem we ran into after the menu was rolled out… Government computers are configured with a security level in Internet Explorer that prohibits font downloading and doesn’t allow the user to change it. Why would they do that? No idea. I don’t know the network administrators, but if I had to guess it would be out of ignorance about downloadable fonts, they would rather disallow it rather than allow it and have it become a security threat. Whatever the reason, i’m not going to change their security settings.

So i’m faced with the problem that the substitute font makes several parts of the menu lay out incorrectly. We thoroughly tested the code before it went out the door, but what we didn’t test was a computer system that disallows downloadable fonts. It simply wasn’t on the radar.

In the process, I cam across a genius jQuery Plugin that allows you to test for alternate fonts. The plugin allows you to specify fonts via jQuery call, which I don’t like, but the “test font” method was particularly interesting.

testFont: function(requested_font, baseline_font) {
var span = $('<span id="font_tester" style="font-family:' + baseline_font + '; font-size:144px;position:absolute;left:-10000px;top:-10000px;visibility:hidden;">mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmml</span>');
$("body").prepend(span);

var baseline_width = span.width();
span.css(“font-family”, requested_font + “,” + baseline_font );
var requested_width = span.width();
span.remove();

// If the dimensions change, the font is installed
return (requested_width != baseline_width);
}

What it does is create a div offstage and give it a default font which you specify, grab the width, give it the control font in question and if the width changes, it's assumed the font has downloaded. Completely brilliant.

I combined it with a body-level class and specified css classes for the hobbled copies of IE:

if (! $.fontunstack.testFont("Helvetica W01 Bd Cn", "Arial")){
$("body").addClass("perfmenu-nofonts");
}

Now I can create an alternate width that will be big enough for the default font and prepend that style with body.perfmenu-nofonts

Pushing it to production in the next 24 hours.

In May of 2010 I moved from St. Petersburg, FL to Arlington, VA for what, at the time, was a six month government contract. The contract was with a Reston, VA company so every day I had to make the commute from Arlington to Reston and back, the most direct route being the Dulles Access Toll Road.
After a month or so I started, for convenience, changing my address on services and utilities to receive the bills at my Virginia address. Once such address change was my car insurance. What I did not realize was that by changing my address on the insurance, Florida would suspend my plates and driver’s license for not having insurance on a car I owned that was registered in the state.
On one commute home, I was stopped by a Toll Road Airport cop for an illegal lane change. I was told that I didn’t have a valid plate or a valid Florida license. My car was towed at a cost of over $600 and it cost me another $100-ish to get Virginia plates in order to get the car out of tow.
Meanwhile, I couldn’t get a Virginia driver’s license because I had a suspended license in Florida. Once I turned my Florida plate in, my Florida license was reinstated, but I now had $1500 worth of tickets in Virginia and Virginia had suspended my Florida license from driving in Virginia. Meanwhile, in order to pay the $1500 in tickets, I still had to get to work in Reston every day.
When I received my Virginia plate, I only received the sticker for the year of renewal. They never sent me the month.
About halfway through paying off the Virginia tickets, I was stopped again by the Toll Road Police for not having the month sticker on my Virginia plate and the officer told me my driving privilege was suspended from a ticket for having a suspended license so i now had a “driving without a license, second offense” and he would require me to appear in court.
I showed up for my court date and the judge informed me that a second offense carried with it the possibility of jail time and I needed a lawyer.
My court date is Nov 17.
With God as my witness, I will never drive the toll road again.

“Why was this done this way?”
“Because i had to get it out the door.”
“But doing it correctly would have saved time.”
“The client was screaming, it just needed to get done.”

It’s an incredibly frustrating conversation every time I have it. I understand progressive knowledge. You do it the way you know to do it until you learn a better way. But these are seasoned developers who regularly turn out very mediocre work (or worse) and then defend it like they’ve created the next iPad.

I’ve always told myself that in order to get better I need to be with people who are better than I am and be pulled kicking and screaming into excellence.

Someone once told me the things that make you the most angry are the things you hate about yourself that you see in other people. I guess the reason i makes me so angry is because i’ve been guilty of doing it and I hate myself when I reflect on projects where i’ve done just that.

Growing up, we were in church every Sunday. We were always rushing around trying to get ready and get to the church by a certain time. One of the benefits of being an adult is being able to chose what events you attend and which ones you don’t. And on Sunday mornings, I choose brunch.

It’s not that I’m irreligious or hate god or the church. I don’t. I just like to carve out at least one day in a week where I’m not bound by a time-based schedule. My rebellion is not against the Almighty, but against the almighty clock. Relaxing at a restaurant drinking champagne cocktails at 10 am is the ultimate fuck you to time-based schedules.

Brunch alone is thoughtful and introspective, but brunch with friends is the best. Talking about war, religion, politics letting the conversation and mood drift from topic to topic… Some of the best times I’ve had.

I’m sitting, as I type, at Freddies Beach Bar in Arlington, Virginia and typing this on my iPad. The news, sports, and Sunday talk shows are on almost every TV in the room, but no one is paying any real attention to what is happening in the world at the moment. Today, it’s about brunch.
